Default Questionnaire for University Course

Hello.

I am currently doing a research project on Guild Wars. It would be really helpful if as many players as possible could fill out this short questionnaire.

If possible please relate your answers to Guild Wars: Factions. However even if you haven’t played that expansion all but one of the questions can still be answered. This questionnaire is focused around the player experience of the game.

1. What is your age (not required)

2. What is your gender (not required)

3. Roughly how many other MMORPG’s or ORPG’s had you played before starting Guild Wars?

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?

The information gathered from this questionnaire will be used in a presentation about the game in a few weeks time.

It would be helpful if you tell any other players of the game about this questionnaire.

Thanks for your help,

Nath

Just 1.

Because it's a good game, and it's fun. And besides buying the game itself it doesn't require you to pay money for subscriptions or microtransactions to be able to be the best.

Solo play, or playing together with a good friend. Doing missions, dungeons and elite areas.

3/5 - I'll admit I didn't care too much for the main storyline (as it was kinda cheesy to me), but I think it's still fairly important.

Well I know I feel happy when I play it together with my friend or complete something hard in the game. And being annoyed when I fail to do something.=p

Posting questions like that is terribly inefficient way to collect your information.

Try creating a free survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/ as you can then export your data in a variety of easily interrogated formats.

To everyone who is planning to fill this in, please consider that personal information, like gender and age, should not be distributed widely across the net. Personal details like these can be used by hackers and cybercriminals for identity theft, or to get access to services like e-mail addresses or game accounts, by guessing the answer to your security question, or by faking identification with personal details.

If you wish to supply the interviewer with your age and gender as well, I recommend sending your interview answers through PM, instead of posting about them openly.

I never saw the problem with telling people age and gender.=p Don't see how it could be useful to people to hack into my computer or something.

A. None, but played a few since and always came back to GW

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)
A. I enjoy the graphics and the posibilities of the game (Play with H/H or players however you feel like it)

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?
A. Relatively stable as I started out with Prophecies

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?
A. The tactical aspect of having a limited number of skills per player and no overpowered armor or weapons due to the armor and damage caps.

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?
A. PvE / Guild socializing

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?
A. 2.5 I didnt like the acting at all in that game (not to speak of the terrible voice acting in the mission scenes) and the story is kind of meh compared to the others.

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?
A. None really, I enjoy the game, but dont get all emotional about it really as its just a game.

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?
A. Not that I know of... havent tried running to the morgue and summoning a Bone Minion or running into a monestary and praying to Grenth or yell at a Monk that he sucks at protting and healing.

3. Roughly how many other MMORPG’s or ORPG’s had you played before starting Guild Wars?
3 or 4

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)

The storyline in the Guild wars games, starting from when i first played it when prophercies was the only one around have always been amazing. When factions was released they took the narrative to another level and made another great game.

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?

It took me quite a while to learn, as this was the first MMORPG i had ever played but the games i have played since have been so much easier because i had my experiences from guild wars to look back on.

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?

Originally it was the team focus of the later game, from the crystal desert onwards it was pretty impossible to do with just henchmen, now the thing that keeps me playing is the huge choice of things to do after you have reached the level cap.

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?

I enjoy the quests a lot since War in Kryta, i thought that quest line was pretty good and it kept me interrested, i also like the social side of the game and getting to know other players and comparing skill setups and builds for either you or your heroes.

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?

5

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?

I suppose it would depend on what i was doing at the time, if its something like grinding out gold for a new armor set or achieving a new reward in the HoM then it would have to be a feeling of achievement and at the same time relief that you have done that one and now to move on to the next one.

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?

I don't feel that it has affected my life outside of the game, i play the game but i still have the time to go to work and to socialise with my friends at the weekend.

Sure Nathis. Let us know how the presentation goes.

1. What is your age (not required)

Age =64

2. What is your gender (not required)

Gender = Male

3. Roughly how many other MMORPG’s or ORPG’s had you played before starting Guild Wars?

One (1), World of Warcraft

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)

No monthly fee means my characters will always be around and I can play them when I want.

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?

Started playing when GW Prophecies went live on April 28, 2005. So learning curve was Easy. These days it would be a bit steeper for new players because there is a lot more game to comprehend.

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?

Combat is good. As a primarily solo player I like the instanced areas. GW is a great game for solo lone wolves. Though it is true as well that on WoW you can be alone most of the time if you want.

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?

PvE mainly, some PvP from time to time, farming loot. Friendly guild. Trading farmable items.

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?

Storyline = 5. Yes, the storyline has to be there or the game feels pointless and meaningless. The Factions storyline was fascinating even though how it fit into the overall game lore was only to be made clear later on.

I could write a research paper on story and lore in both GW and WoW. I'll bet you could too!

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?

Concentration on tasks that are fun to carry out and rewarding when completed. This game is a hobby for me.

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?

Especially in times of trial it has been a good friend always there to cheer me up!

Couple of questions are interesting.

10+

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)

No mudflation. I can stop playing as long as I like and still be able to do new areas and pvp competitively when I get back. Runs counter to conventional MMO wisdom, which is 'Design something good enough to get them playing, then turn it into a skinner box. Collect the monthly fee from addicts'.

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?

Pretty shallow, rising a little more sharply towards where I currently am. Guess I'm peaking....

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?

No mudflation. Skill/mechanic interactions and combinations provide a great deal of initial depth.

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?

PvP, PvE I haven't done before.

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?

1.

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?

Don't really get that involved. Mostly concentrating on solving the problems of whatever situation I put myself in.

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?

No.

IN a game like WoW, my progress in the game is limited by other people. While I am a social gamer and enjoy playing with other humans, I also prefer my character's progress to be under my control. Guild Wars does not force me onto a treadmill in order to "keep up" with other players -- I can choose my character's visual appearance, and the armor I bought four YEARS ago is still top-of-the-line in terms of game mechanics.

Simplicity of concept, in that you have a limited selections of skills and abilities based on a large pool of skills. That has been diluted with the expansions, unfortunately, which added super-powered skills that are mathematically (but not aesthetically) required.

I'm not certain I understand the question. In general terms, story rates a 5 -- it's very important. In terms of FACTIONs, the story had serious flaws (thus rating a 3) that hurt my enjoyment of the game -- namely, the fact that my character was simply there to support NPCs. Overall, I loved Factions, I just hated Togo/Mehnlo hogging the limelight and controlling my success.

What a load of paranoid BS.

I'm 49, Male, married, with three kids, living in Florida, and I drive a white Jeep Cherokee with a plastic gator named "Rufus" on the dashboard. My favorite color is PURPLE.

Oh my god! The Internet bad guys are going to get me now!

Thanks you for the information, we now know where to find the wanted fugitive "Rufus". A CIA/KGB/FBI-SWAT Team will be on its way and please try to stay further than 2 Miles away from your Jeep to avoid being harmed... This Message will self destruct in 10 seconds. (Please count slowly from 10 to 1 and press Alt + F4)

1. 21
2. M
3. This is the first =)
4. The fact that it doesn't have a monthly subscription fee, and is just as entertaining as World of Warcraft keeps me attracted to it.
5. I pick(ed) up things rather quickly, or I thought I did.
6. Difficult question, with the large number of broken ones out there it's hard to find one that isn't broken that I like.
7. Guild Socializing
8. 5, although the story was boring .
9. Excitement, I always enjoy logging on and playing with my guild, specifically with my co-leader, who has a special place in my heart.
10. See #9 To sum that up, she has become the closest friend I ever had and I am happy that I met her.

Well I've played WoW and EQ2 and personally I got tired of max armor, weapon. Mythics and epics. It was a constant grind for the better armor, weapons and skill masters. I came back to GW because frankly I get more bang for my buck any day. And I love the costumes lol. I like having a story, a reason to feel anger that those crummy white mantle would hurt the settlers lol

Quote:
5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?
I started a long time ago and was new to any kind of game that killed stuff so I was a bit hesitant. Took for me anyway to feel comfortable a couple of months. But getting good at it took longer. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Quote:
6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?
Max armor and I'm done Good weapon rewards, good ratio of green drop weapons. And I love missions with a story and the cut scenes are well done.

Quote:
7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?
Since I work long hours I sure like being able to have H/H and get something done instead of LFG for hours on end. Plus there are so many quests to do.
Chatting with friends and trading sometimes.

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?
5 Story is important to me and so is the lore behind the story. Anet did a good job with factions I think.

Quote:
9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?
Oh sometimes frustration Main emotions is a sense of satisfaction when I come up with a build for myself and hero and it actually works. Not from a prefab build but my own. Also since I have a vivid imagination I'll go so far as take that Shiro lol. But mostly I just enjoy the game and don't analyze myself that closely.

To be quite honest I believe it has developed a sense of teamwork in me that is stronger than before. This spills over into work and I honestly think it's helped my leadership skills.

1. What is your age (not required)
20

2. What is your gender (not required)
male

3. Roughly how many other MMORPG’s or ORPG’s had you played before starting Guild Wars?
1 (WOW - but only on private servers if it matters)

4. Why do you feel Guild Wars is worth your time over other MMORPG’s? (if you don’t feel it is worth your time explain why)
especially because of no monthly fees and it is by far the best of all the other free to play MMORPGs i considered playing

5. How was the learning curve of the game for you?
PVE - just perfect (played proph first if it matters ) PVP - a bit steep but that's only because of arrogant elitists

6. What game mechanics of Guild Wars draws you to play it?
hero/hench system is nice, also the pve missions are sweet.

7. What aspect do you enjoy the most (PvP, Quests, Guild socializing, Solo play, trading, other: specify)?
general PVE (with friends or guildies if possible)

8. Only answer this question in relation to Guild Wars: Factions.
Out of 5 (1 being not at all and 5 being very important) How important is the narrative (storyline) for your enjoyment of the game?
5/5 - the game would not be the same with any other story or system to present it.

9. What are the main emotions you are aware of feeling when playing the game?
joy while playing, satisfaction upon success, occasional episodes of rage

10. Has Guild Wars affected your life in anyways beyond the scope of the game? How?
not really.

The information gathered from this questionnaire will be used in a presentation about the game in a few weeks time.

It would be helpful if you tell any other players of the game about this questionnaire.

Thanks for your help,

Nath
hope it helps

1. 25
2. Male
3. Hard to say how many, as I started way back with UO in '97. I'd guess eight.
4. Unlike most online RPGs, the skill bar system gives me a lot of creative flexibility; I don't feel confined to my profession's "default" play style and it's easier to make "themed" characters. Aesthetically, the game also has a unique style and having no subscription fee helps us poor unemployed folk.
5. I'd say it took me about a year before I was "good". I started the game off as a Mesmer for the challenge, but my first run through a campaign (Prophecies) was extremely difficult for me.
6. Other than point #4, I enjoy being able to call targets without typing.
7. I used to be a JQ/AB addict until maxing my Kurzick rank. Nowadays I just sit back and help guildmates, create wacky builds and work on my HoM.
8. When I first played through Factions, I was more focused on creating new builds than the narrative, though it did get interesting once the messengers showed up. I'd give this a 2/5.
9. This isn't directly related to playing the game, but helping out guild mates makes me happy.
10. I started playing GW in college. Bad mistake, but I managed to get by. Also, one time I had to completely shut off my clingy ex because it was a double EOTN rep weekend.

Best of luck on your paper!

3.Only one, the beer of MMOs- Runescape ;D

4. It seemed more involving and you could be more creative with what you did with your build. I also loved the professions and how they worked more than those from other MMOs such as WoW. On the note of WoW......art style of GW is a major 1-up there.... xD

5. Just right, I didn't discover pvxwiki or any gw wiki's until probably just under 3/4 the way into Factions and coped fine on my first character as Elementalist. I would say the learning curve is definitely steeper depending on profession.

6. Basically the skill system. The titles make my progress seem more rewarding too.

7. PvP keeps roping me back again and again and again, High-End pve farms also keep me occupied- I love the feeling of rushing through Frostmaw's HM @ sinway with alliance members, and team work throughout DoA.

8. I'd say it didn't affect me all that much, on the first play through I watched every cutscene and got the idea of it. I'd say about a 2.5/5

9. RAGE AT PVP RAGE AT PVP RAGE AT PVP.....*ahem*... Just general content at fulfilling my need for escapism ]---during pve ;D

10. I feel that the way it encourages cooperation and teamwork has helped in corresponding areas of my life. Also on a negative aspect it fights a constant battle with revision / college work xD most often gaining the upper-hand >_<
